I just this letter from my mom:
Well, it's official. Gohan is going blind. Progressive retinal degeneration.
I took him to a vet eye specialist who said cats with that amount of degeneration were usually 8 or 9 years old. I guess he has a rapidly progressing case. It is the result of a combination of recessive genes, which is what I suspected. I kept thinking he had macular degeneration, but cats don't have maculas, but it's the same effect in the long run...blindness. There is nothing that can be done. The retina simply disappears.
She, the vet, said it was painless and the he could live a happy, well adjusted life. Just keep him indoors, for all the obvious reasons.
Poor Gohan! I've already noticed that he can't tell night from day. I guess we'll have to get him a little football helmet to protect him from wayward walls and chair legs.
Tread carefully. Blind cat in residence.
my poor Kitten...
