Do androids play with electric friends?
Ok, so let's be Data-logical about this. Even if you could hang with this fictitious character, he wouldn't be able to be your friend. He's an ANDROID. Although he DID have sex with Lt. Yar. . .

Ok, I'm going to stop being all geeky now.

ahhh but
Friendship is defined in many different ways. Even Data could be a friend he obviously shows loyalty towards his comrads and strives to be more human. He also got an emotion chip which would enable him to feel for his friends much like a human would. Sure it shorted out a few times but friendships can be like that too. ;) *snort*

Technically, even on Star Trek, he's still not alive per se.

and you thought you were being clever... >:))
oh but how can you define "life." Even that has defied empirical science.

If a machine is identical to human in nearly every way, where does the machinery end and the humanity begin?

Ghost in the Shell is good times, but it's not like it's a super-original thought.

Aye
Shirow in general is the king of what I like to call bozo-profound philosophy, i.e. ideas that are, or have become pretty self-evident over the 50+ years they have been around (but are no less wrong for it) He has pretty much siad this himself. Of course he reforges the ideas into very cool stories set in ultra-stylized SF playgrounds, but the most of the philosophy in Shirow can be reduced to Turing/Asimov/Gaia hypothesis/etc. incarnated as gun-toting chicks (cyborg or no) with large breasts.
